One Beautiful Thing ~ twenty

That orange sherbet coloured stone, second from the top is currently residing in my left coat pocket until I am ready to make a wish and release it back to the sea.

I find, more often than not, I am drawn to the rocky beaches. While soft sand feels good under the toes, rocky beaches have other gifts to offer your senses. The expanse of shape and colour is a feast for the eyes.

And for the ears... when I walked across this beach, not only did I love the deep hollow sound echoing under my shoes, but if I listened carefully, with each step forward I could hear little crabs scurrying below the rocks as I unintentionally disturbed their hiding places. Who knew, waiting for high tide could be so dangerous?

This was a tiny crescent beach, tucked into a series of rocky cliffs. I have spent entire afternoons sitting on the edges of those cliffs, looking down on the beach from afar...but this time I wanted a closer look. It was well worth the descent.

  1. I couldn't resist this photo. I have a collection of similar shapes and sizes too. I collect 3-4 at a time when I travel and stack at will. Drives my husband crazy when I start bringing home rocks in my suitcase! A girl has to do what a girl has to do:) I moved them yesterday and had fun stacking them all. Very therapeutic!
    Yours are lovely :)

  2. Those colors are my favorites! The plum wine, sherbert orange, bay leaf green and dusky rose work so well with each other. They remind me of everything Fall!

  3. Those stones are glorious. I've never seen an orange one like that. I bet the texture looking down at all those beautiful rocks below the water's surface is quite brilliant.

  5. Such colorful stones!

I brought home a pocketful of stones from the Olympic Peninsula (all blue, though). They are now in my bathroom sink - and make ordinary activities so much more meditative and enjoyable.

  6. Lovely. When we go to Michigan, we get the combination of sand and rocks...I always bring a few home to treasure.

  9. I remember the first time I visited a rocky beach. I was in my late twenties and I was shocked to my bones. Beaches are supposed to be sandy, I kept thinking. It really took me a while to adjust to a rocky beach. But, you are right, it is far more stimulating.
