Flights of Fancy

If I could start over... be born again and become anything... actually, if I could choose my talent, and grow up all over again, I would wish to be a children's book illustrator. I come from a family of artists so I know it's in my genes, somewhere. Somewhere very lost.

I imagine myself hidden away under some magnificent tree, drawing pictures of magical things that don't really exist. I would create worlds that would appear so much more beautiful than the mundane everyday that my eyes have grown too accustomed to. They would still look like places we have here in the real world, but they would be better somehow... places I would wish I could enter into and never come back.

I wander the children's section of book stores just so that I can see the world with a more sublime twist as I imagine myself in the places that someone else has conjured up. It astounds me how creative people can be.

It is a little bit of escapism I seek. A way to buffer reality. Luckily, sometimes I can find things inside my camera that give me that little hit of awe. A little taste of wonderment. Maybe I can't draw very well, but I can see. I just never know what that lovely click of my shutter has waiting for my eyes to gaze upon. Cameras are magical objects capable of discovering other magical objects. They make instant illustrations... which is a good thing for my impatient nature.

  1. For some reason this little seed reminds me of Cinderella's carriage. Hmmm... lovely!
    I
have always wanted to be a writer as well, even going so far as to submit a few short stories into magazines. (Back in the day when they had short stories in magazines...do they anymore? Maybe I'm just reading the wrong kind of magazines. LOL!)

I had two articles published for work that went across Saskatchewan. My only claim to writing fame. Sad I know. Haha!

You have a talent for photography that is for sure. And it's never too late to do something. Perhaps a photo-book for children??

Enjoy October Jaime. I hope your storms have settled down!

  2. You definitely create those places with your images, they were what first drew me to your blog. We could all use a little escapism from time to time and what better place than the children's book section.

  4. You create beautiful "drawings" with your camera, Jaime! But I think you would make a wonderful children's book illustrator - our imagination is so rich! xoxo

  5. Your photographs are like little drawings that could easily fit into children's books. I could absolutely see you creating something like this.

  6. {I hope this isn't a duplicate! Google keeps giving me an error. :)

    And I would write them.

I can picture your photos as illustrations. They always show me a magical world that does exist, even when I forget. One of the many reasons I love them.

  7. I love this post for more reasons than I can write here, but I will say that I have been writing a children's chapter book for the past couple of years, collaborating on it with a co-writer/illustrator, and we are nearly finished. I mention this especially since in our book we have a magnificent tree. When you spoke of sitting under a magnificent tree to write, I immediately pictured you beneath the tree from our story. And then I was delighted by the layers of this, so I needed to share it with you.

I love to draw and paint, but I feel very much like you do about photography. I'll be patient with writing, but I do love the more immediate gratification of photography. Speaking of which, this photo is absolutely beautiful, my friend. I so hope you are thriving and happy. xo Gigi

  8. It's Thanksgiving Day, and our family eats an early dinner instead of lunch. Just now there is a lull between the hectic preparations and all the guests arriving for the meal. I wanted to take some of that time to visit my blogging friends. I needed to say thank you. Thank you for the inspiration you provide here in your place and for the comments you leave behind when you visit mine. Happy Thanksgiving, friend. I miss you.

  9. I have always wanted to be an artist, too--although I don't have the genes for it at all. I have learned to love photography and mixed media art because it lies within my capabilities and satisfies that desire for the most part. But there are still many times when I wish I could draw or paint, escape visually instead of just through words.
